OBJECTIVES OF POSITION
The position is responsible for installing, configuring, troubleshooting, designing, performance tuning and maintaining Microsoft SQL SERVER databases on windows platforms.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Short and long-term capacity planning, performance capacity monitoring collaborating with development resources, system administrators, system architects and Management.
- Stay abreast of current releases of the RDMBS software, including compatibility with operating systems, third party software and utilities.
- Work with high-level objectives and goals.
- Provide applications /database support with ability to resolve problems; contact vendor support when necessary; facilitate application development and client problem resolution with optimum speed and efficiency.
- Database tuning; identify problems and implement solutions; ensure the database is running at optimum speed and efficiency.
- Maintain backup/recovery environment to respond quickly to refresh data; verify implementation of correct backup strategy; develop recovery procedures; support recovery from loss of data caused by user or system error.
- Maintain secure database environment with expectation to perform database security audits; maintain user and object level permissions; install security patch updates to ensure database is at a current security release.
- Reorganize database structures as needed to automate procedures at regular intervals; use tools to reorganize or de-fragment database table spaces, tables, and indexes; provide efficient database environment to maximize productivity and improve performance.
- Provide database design as needed with expectation to research and recommend optimal design criteria; publish standards and work with development staff; standardize environment and improve efficiency Capacity planning and reporting: Monitor file system space, database allocation, etc.; verify efficient use of disk storage; reclaim dead space; optimize space allocation and avoid out of space conditions.
- Serve as the technical lead in the evaluation and recommendation of DBA tools and new RDBMS technologies.
- Assist in the definition and development of database documentation and standards.
- Participate in 24x7 on call rotation

- Sbility to learn/maintain knowledge of multiple application areas.
- Strong analytical/problem solving skills.
- Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
- Troubleshoot SQL Server service outages
- As new systems are brought in-house, choose whether to use clustering, log shipping, mirroring, Windows Azure, or other technologies.
- Deploy database change scripts provided by third party vendors.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks on his or her plate at a time while working in reactive mode to production issues with immediate shift to identifying, monitoring and tuning production issues that may arise during normal business hours and after business hours.
- Upgrade and patch databases and systems as requested.
- Communicate complex technical information in a concise and articulate manner.
- Must be able to quickly grasp new technological concepts and implement them.
- Must have strong organizational, complex problem solving, and analytical skills.
- Strong TSQL skills with a solid understanding of SQL (sub-queries, set-based queries, link server operations, minus/union, inline queries etc.).
- Experience using DMV queries to answer questions about server-level performance.
